For Better or Worse?

The eventual outcome of your life on planet earth will be either better or worse than its current situation, determining on how serious you want to take it.

As much as this piece is centered on addressing the youth, adults are encouraged to peruse, for they would learn, and even teach their children to thread this great path.

The most blessed phase of human life is undoubtedly, the youthful phase. Approach any adult and ask about his/her life, you would realise that most of the things which shaped the rest of such person’s life was a result of the choices they made when they were still very agile!

“Give me back my youth and I will pay anything for it – Late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.”

As a young chap, you’ve got to know that; your attainment into the height of greatness, or eventual failure in life is literally determined by the kind of choices you make at this phase of life. It doesn’t matter whether an Astrologer or a Fortune Teller had envisioned your future, telling you how great you’d become in life, a wrong choice is all it takes to shatter that yet-to-be plunged seemingly bright future.

These choices are however so powerful, that, irrespective of how they are made, either consciously or unconsciously, they cannot be reversed. This is quite evident because for instance, once you fail to achieve what is on your to-do list for the morning, the afternoon won’t be enough to cover up for the lost hours. These choices may seem irrelevant to us because of the strength in us and peers around us, but failure to make the right ones may come back to haunt us.

I’ve seen oodles of old men and women chewing dirge as gum, having to labour their ass off with grey hairs because they never had a strategic plan for what their lives should look like. You wouldn’t at your old age, desire to become a street urchin, raising your hands in salute of guys of your children’s age before you can put food in your belly!

Many young minds are filled with vain thoughts. Of how they’d club 24/7 without having a meaningful use of their time. Let me tell you, your mind is the centre stage of your eventual result. What you feed your mind with is what you get out of life.

Bishop David Oyedepo said:

“The money you spend in developing your mind can buy you all you ever want.”

You can read my post on poverty begins in the mind here.

You’ve got to invest in your mind. Read books that are in line with your career, listen to podcasts that will position you for recommendations when the opportunity comes knocking. You can’t afford to be caught unawares. No! Let me tell you, the best type of investment you can ever have is developing yourself.

Do you have a dream for your future? Have you even drafted out the goals you want to achieve in life? Life is a result of cause and effect and you can’t reap what you’ve not sowed. You’ve got to make the most of your brain and let it sweat. Now is the best time to do the thinking! When you think as a youth, you think best. When you get old, experience is all you’d b able to bank on. Plan out how you want your life to be and know what you want to get out of life.

This may sound scary but it’s not. The bigger your dream, the bigger the challenges you’re likely to face. There’s no cause for alarm, it only shows that if you can dream then, you can achieve. There’s never a ‘too big dream”, once you can map it out, it can now be said of you to be on course for the meaningful journey of your life towards success. That’s a right choice to make, because you want to be known for something great.

Let me reiterate at this point that, it’s not enough for you to pray and fast, it’s time to think and act because, the Bible says “the power of the youth is in their strength”. When you fail to make the most of your strength now, it will be too late to wield it.

Is it Photography you’re interested in? Chase it! You cannot become a good social media expert by making football your hobby. That reminds me, position your dream as your hobby and before you know it, it would become your lifestyle.

Now, I’m not saying it will all be rosy, we’d surely face challenges but may I tell you that the process is not in the baking but in the making. The gold won’t come out as gold if it doesn’t pass through fire. The joy therein is that, the challenges will only serve as stepping stones to destiny fulfilment. In fact, they are there to make us better, not bitter.

You’ve tried it before but failed, go back to it, do it again and again. Don’t give up because that phase will pass and you’d excellently graduate from the stage.

Thomas Edison’s teachers said he was “too stupid to learn anything.” He was fired from his first two jobs for being “non-productive.” As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?”

Edison replied,

“I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”

See, when you understand the battles confronting young people, you will know how to take the best decisions. When you see how youths are wasting away, how others are trying to lobby out of the country through the Mediterranean to Europe and eventually get nothing, you’d know how to confront it. If you had the privilege to interview a once poor man, he’d tell you what choices to make, one of which I’m sure of is diligence.

It’s time to stop being a dreamer, and start becoming a Visioneer. Young men sees what is to come. According to one of my mentors, Peter-Wealth, he said:

“Old men have age but, elders have result”.

As much as you cannot think to bring result, you’re regarded as old irrespective of how young you may be. When you are full of ideas and result that matters, you’d seat with the council of elders. In essence, you’d be respected everywhere.

Before I leave, may I ask you this last question? It is one of the biggest choices where you cannot afford to make any mistake because, it’d either make or shatter you.
What is the kind of wife or husband you want to marry? You need to have the picture in your mind so that you don’t just go for anything.
But then, settle your future first before you look for a future partner. It’s not a present but a future partner!

As youth, the next generation will sail on the coast we cleared. We cannot afford to fail destiny. You cannot afford to fail the upcoming generation.

This is not the time to be cosmetic or plastic but to be realistic with your dreams. Don’t spend your youth age knacking all around, live it intentionally.

  1. Well, I must commend your vision and also congratulate you on the path you have chosen to dwell on. Writing is an art which only a few youths have explored because it is innate, more of a gift. The write up is quite insightful and thought provoking ,indeed life itself is a choice because you can either choose to make something of life or let life make something of you. A very notable saying I have come to love is that when life hands you lemons, make Lemonades out of them. In all sir, always remember that a writer must be thorough because what you write is a reflection of who you are, therefore proof read for typographical errors, and approach mentors for cross checking before dishing online. I wish you good success in this line of endeavor Sir, Shalom
